CDs

Compact Disc-Digital Audio (CD-DA), a digital medium developed jointly by Philips and Sony and launched in the U.S. in October, 1982, was the first incarnation of the compact disc, used to digitally record and play back music at an unprecedented quality. It continues to be the most popular form of distribution of audio recordings and other digital content. It is anticipated that it will survive the introduction of the DVD format and remain the key medium for audio recordings and computer data in the years to come.

Today, the term represents a number of predefined disk formats for storing audio recordings, computer data, video games or multimedia:

  • CD-DA is the original CD format all other formats are based on. CD-Graphics and CD-Text are its extensions while CD-Extra makes it possible to add computer data to audio tracks,
  • CD-ROM is an extension of CD-DA, used to store computer data such as games or other applications,
  • Compact Disc-Read Only Memory. A standard for compact disc to be used as a digital memory medium for personal computers. The specifications for CD-ROM were first defined in the Yellow Book,
  • CD-ROM XA is a multimedia version of CD-ROM, used as a basis for the Video CD, CD-I and Photo CD formats.
